By the end of this guide you will have a plan for buying sim racing gear at a good moment instead of an anxious one: which sale windows to watch through the year, how to tell a real deal from a well dressed listing, when an open box or refurbished unit makes sense, and which upgrade to buy first. Start by placing yourself. Are you buying your first wheel, or upgrading a rig you already race on? Do you play on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC? And is your next purchase something you need this month, or something you can wait a season for? Your answers decide how much the calendar should matter to you.
This page is a long term companion, not a price list; the product cards pull current pricing from the retailer on their own. Our picks come from manufacturer specifications and recurring owner feedback, which you can read about in how we review. If sim racing is new to you, read Getting Started first, then come back with a shopping list.
The sale calendar, season by season
US retail runs on holiday weekends, and sim racing gear rides along. The dates below follow a fixed rule, so mark them now. What any seller does on those dates is up to them; nothing here promises a discount.
| Window | When it falls | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| After the holidays | Early January | Watch for returned and open box stock as gift returns get processed. |
| Presidents Day | Third Monday in February | Check brand sites and big box retailers for long weekend promotions. |
| Memorial Day | Last Monday in May | A good moment to price cockpits and seats before summer. |
| Prime Day | Summer, dates set by Amazon | Amazon only. Compare against the brand’s own store before you buy. |
| Labor Day | First Monday in September | Check direct sellers and their clearance pages. |
| Fall Prime event | Autumn, dates set by Amazon | A second Amazon window ahead of the holidays. |
| Black Friday and Cyber Monday | November 27 and November 30, 2026 | The widest window of the year across Amazon and direct sellers. |
Two of those windows get their own guides. For Amazon’s summer and fall events, including how to read a Prime listing, see Prime Day sim racing deals. For the late November rush across Amazon and the brand stores, see Black Friday sim racing deals.
When is the next Fanatec, MOZA, or Trak Racer sale?
The honest answer is that we could not find a published sale calendar from any of the major direct sellers, including Fanatec and MOZA Racing. Several direct sellers have run seasonal promotions in past years, but past behavior is not a schedule.
So set up a system instead of waiting on a rumor. First, sign up for the newsletter on each brand’s own site for the gear you want; announcements usually reach subscribers first. Second, bookmark the brand’s sale, outlet, or clearance pages. Trak Racer, for example, keeps discount and clearance collections on its own store. Third, follow the brand’s official social accounts, because short promotions sometimes appear there with little notice. Then check those three places in each window from the table above.
Gear worth watching
These are established products with a clear platform story, split by job so you can watch the category you need.
Wheels and bundles
Match these to your platform before anything else. The Logitech G29 runs on PS5, PS4, and PC. The G923 comes in two versions, and the one carded here is the Xbox and PC model, so do not grab it for a PlayStation. The Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro is licensed for PS5 and PS4 and also works on PC; it is the Fanatec direct drive route for PlayStation, while the Fanatec CSL DD base does not run on PlayStation. The MOZA R5 bundle in this listing is sold as a PC kit, and current MOZA bases do not support PlayStation (MOZA has announced separate PS5 licensed models with no release date yet). If your platform is still an open question, our wheel compatibility guide walks through it, and the platform roundups for PS5 and Xbox Series X narrow the field.
Pedals
Both sets use a load cell brake, which reads how hard you press rather than how far the pedal travels. Read the connection rules carefully. Logitech lists the G RS Pedals as connecting directly to its PRO and RS50 bases on console, through a separately sold Racing Adapter for G series wheels, or over USB on PC. Fanatec lists the CSL Elite Pedals V2 as USB capable on PC only; on PS5 or Xbox they must plug into a compatible Fanatec base.
Cockpits and accessories
The Next Level Racing GT Lite and the Playseat Challenge X both fold for storage, which makes them sensible first cockpits for a shared room. Playseat does not recommend direct drive bases on the Challenge line, so if a direct drive wheel is in your plans, look at the rigid frames in our cockpit roundup instead. The Logitech Driving Force Shifter is the classic accessory to watch if you own a G29, G920, or G923, because the standard wheels do not include one; it plugs into the wheel rather than into a USB port.
How to spot a real deal in five checks
Run every promising listing through these steps, in order.
- Confirm the exact model and platform. Read the full product title, not the thumbnail. Many wheels ship in separate PlayStation and Xbox versions that look almost identical, and a console version will not switch sides.
- List what is in the box. A wheel only listing may lack pedals. A base only listing may lack a rim. The standard Logitech G920 does not include a shifter; only listings described as a bundle do. Add the missing parts to the real cost.
- Check who sells it. On marketplaces, note whether the seller is the retailer itself, the brand’s official store, or a third party. That decides who handles returns and warranty.
- Compare against the brand’s own store. The brand site sometimes carries a bundle or a refurbished unit that beats the marketplace listing.
- Read the return policy before you pay. Keep the receipt and the box. Holiday purchases sometimes carry longer return windows, but confirm the terms on the seller’s page rather than assuming.
Prices on Amazon and brand sites change often, so check the live page before you commit.
Open box and certified refurbished
Refurbished gear is the quiet deal that runs all year, and several brands now sell it directly. Fanatec runs a Certified Refurbished program; the company says each unit is inspected, cleaned, and has its firmware updated where applicable, and that refurbished products carry a two year warranty and the same 30 day return policy as new purchases. Logitech sells Certified Refurbished devices on its own store and through its eBay Refurbished brand store, with a warranty from the date of purchase. MOZA’s US store has listed refurbished bundles as well. Amazon’s Renewed program covers most Renewed items with a 90 day return window under its Renewed Guarantee.
Prefer the brand’s own refurbished program first, because the warranty comes straight from the maker. Next, a large retailer’s open box or renewed program with a clear return window. Before you buy, confirm the warranty length, the return window, and that every part is included. Plain packaging is fine; a missing pedal cable or quick release is not.
Buying used: what to check
Private sales can be good value, but the inspection is on you. Ask to see the gear running, on video or in person, then work through this list:
- Ask for the original receipt. Warranty transfer rules vary by brand, so check the maker’s terms before assuming coverage moves with the hardware.
- Confirm the platform version and that the unit updates through the maker’s current software.
- Turn the wheel slowly from lock to lock. Owners describe grinding, clicking, or dead spots as the warning signs on gear and belt wheels.
- Press each pedal through its full travel while watching the input display in the maker’s software. Jumps or flickers point to a worn sensor.
- Check that the power supply, cables, clamps, and quick release are all present. Replacing a proprietary power brick can erase the savings.
- Pay with a method that offers buyer protection.
Direct drive bases are strong motors. Whatever you buy, new or used, run it at low strength first and keep hands clear of the rim when powering on.
What to buy first, by budget tier
Sales tempt you to grab the biggest item on the page. Follow the order experienced drivers recommend instead.
- Entry tier. Buy a complete wheel and pedal set for your platform and a way to mount it firmly. A wobbling desk wastes a good wheel. Our guide to cockpits, stands, and desk mounts helps you pick.
- Mid tier. Upgrade pedals before the wheel. Experienced drivers consistently point to a load cell brake as the change that most improves consistency, because you brake by pressure the way a real car asks you to. Our load cell vs potentiometer guide explains why, and best sim racing pedals lists options.
- High tier. Move to a direct drive base only once your pedals and mounting can keep up, and budget for a rigid cockpit at the same time.
If you are unsure where your money should go, how much a sim racing setup costs lays out the trade-offs.
Who should skip the sale
A discount only helps if the purchase was right to begin with. Hold off if this describes you:
| If this is you | Do this instead |
|---|---|
| You have not settled on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC | Decide the platform first. Most wheels lock you into one console family. |
| Your current rig still has no firm mount | Fix the mounting before buying a stronger wheel. |
| You are tempted by a direct drive base on a folding seat | Check the cockpit maker’s guidance; many folding frames are not rated for it. |
| The deal is a bundle you would split up anyway | Price the parts you actually need on their own. |
| You would stretch past your budget because of a countdown timer | Walk away. Another window comes along within months. |
Your next step
Write down your platform, your tier, and the one item that would improve your driving most. Sign up for that brand’s newsletter today, bookmark its outlet or refurbished page, and put the next window from the calendar above on your phone. When that weekend arrives, run the five checks before you pay. If you are still building your first setup, start with sim racing for beginners.
